To get the best results from your new Blinds, you will need to carefully follow the fitting instructions detailed below.

If fitting the blind within the window recess, check to make sure that you have mad an allowance to clear window handles, also remove any ornaments or other items from the window sill.

If fitting outside the recess, make sure that you do not fix too close to the edge of the window recess as the plaster may break away leaving you with time consuming filling and repainting. 50mm (2”) from the edge of the window should be sufficient, but still begin the drilling process at low speed if you have a variable speed drill. This will help to minimise cracking.

If you have to drill through tiles, you local DIY store will stock ‘Tile Drill Bits’ specifically for the purpose, and please remember never use your drill on the hammer setting when drilling through tiles, if you do you will almost certainly crack the tiles.

Place protective sheets over items which might be damaged by dust or fragments created by drilling.

Make sure that you have a sturdy step ladder if you cannot comfortably reach to drill or fix the Blinds.

Electric or Cordless Drill (preferably with a Hammer drill option)

Metal Tape Measure.

Sharp Pencil or Pen ( Pencil marks are easier to remove if you mark in the wrong place by mistake)

Spirit level. (If you are fitting the blind outside the recess, this will ensure that the blind is level). If you do not have a spirit level, measure down from the ceiling to each of your pencil marks, this is not absolutely foolproof but will generally provide a good guide.

Dustpan and Brush or Hoover. (Once your drilling is finished and you have fixed the brackets, clean up all the dust and debris, this will prevent the blind being soiled when you fit it in position.)

If you are top fitting within the window recess, you are likely to drill into a concrete or metal lintel. If the lintel above your window is concrete you will require a 5.5mm tungsten tipped hammer drill bit. This will be perfect for the red wall plugs supplied with your blinds. If the lintel is metal, you will require a 3mm (1/8”) High Speed Steel (HSS) Twist Drill bit. (You do not put your drill on a hammer setting when using this type of drill bit). Although there is no definitive rule, Concrete lintels were in widespread use up until the late 1960’s or 70’s, after that metal lintels became the norm. To be safe, make sure that you have both types of Drill Bit.
