Welcome to the fourth article in our a five part series, covering all aspects of selecting the best blind type for your room and your personailtiy.

Question 4 - Where is the window located?

  • What type of room is the blind to go in?

Mostly any blind can go in any room but there a few notable exceptions below.

Conservatories - do not install real wood venetians or faux wood venetians in a conservatory. These products cannot take the extreme temperatures generated in these areas.

Bathrooms and kitchens - do not install a real wood or a pleated blind in these rooms due to the excessive humidity. Romans also may not be suitable for these room types but this will depend on the room size and the level of ventilation you have.

  • Sunny and south facing window or a window in a darker area.

If you have a very sunny window that gets very hot we would recommend you look at our pleated blind range as there are pleated fabrics which are designed to reflect heat and help to keep your rooms cooler. Aluminium Venetians or Vertical blinds are also good in these areas as the slats can be angled to block glare whilst still letting light into the room.

If you have a room that is particularly dark a white aluminium venetian or a white real wood and faux wood venetian with a gloss finish can help to bounce any available light around the room. You may consider if this room is not overlooked to use a sheer roller blind to dress the window whilst letting through as much light as possible.

  • A window overlooked or a view you want to preserve as much as possible.

If your window is overlooked we would advise aluminium venetian, real wood and faux wood venetian. This is so you can angle the slats to let in light but you can still have privacy.

Alternatively, you could look at a sheer roller blind so during the day you can keep the blind down but still see out. You may want a thicker secondary blind or curtains if this room is being used at night for greater privacy.

Another option is a Z-lite Blind which offers the best of both worlds with sheer sections which can be turned to opaque using the chain to rotate fabric panels within the blind to increase privacy as necessary.

Pleated blinds  and roller blinds are excellent for preserving as much of a view as possible if you window overlooks a scenic area. When these blind types are fully raised, they have only a small gather at the top of the window so you can see out easily.

  • Is there furniture in the vicinity or a kitchen/bathroom counter in front of the window?

If there is furniture by the window you want to select a blind where you can select where the blind controls are placed so you have the controls at the most convenient side of the window within easy reach. Most of our blind ranges have the option to pick side the controls are placed on. A few of our wood and faux wood venetian ranges have set controls sides so be sure to check this on the product’s key points if you are shopping within these ranges.

If you have a counter/worktop in front of the blind and might have trouble reaching the cords you could opt for a wand controlled Vertical blind and request the wand to be as long as possible. Some customers find that a spring controlled roller blind is better in these circumstances but this will depend on your height / reach and the width of your worktop.

If your window is particularly high up then do supply the installation measurement when you order. This is the measurement from where you will be installing the top of the blind down to the floor. This will ensure we make the cords long enough for you to reach but are at least 150cm from the floor making them child safe.
